The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands offer more variety than any other area of South Africa. Aside from its stunningly beautiful landscapes, it's a great base for exploring the Drakensberg, it has a strong connection with Nelson Mandela's exploits and has a famous statue and a museum dedicated to the great man, it has wine-tasting and local craft breweries. It's only an hour away from Durban's beaches, there are adventure and adrenaline activities aplenty, it's a haven for artists and has its own art route (as well as some of the best examples of prehistoric San rock art), the battlefields of the Anglo-Zulu and Boer wars are a stone's throw away, township tours are easily arranged and it even has a game reserve where you can wander around amongst African wildlife.
